How We Do It
How We Replace A Boat Floor
Flooring is the one job where the cheap version and the proper version look identical on the day and completely different two seasons later. What separates them is whether anyone looked underneath, and how the edges were finished.
Check What Is Under The Carpet
Before quoting anything we walk the deck and check for soft spots, then lift a section where we need to see the plywood underneath. Carpet hides a rotting sub floor extremely well, and laying new material over one is the single most common way owners waste money on this job. You get an honest answer on what is under there first.
Sub Floor Repair Or Replacement
Where the deck has gone soft we cut back to sound material and replace it, sealing the new panel so it does not go the same way. If the damage has reached the stringers underneath then it has stopped being a flooring job, and we will tell you that plainly rather than covering it up with new carpet.
Template Cut And Bond
Furniture, hatches, and trim come out so the new flooring can be templated to the actual deck rather than cut around obstacles in place. It is then bonded with marine grade adhesive across the full surface, which is what stops the bubbling and lifting you get when material is only glued at the edges.
Edging Fasteners And Finish

My floor feels soft. Can you just replace the carpet?
We could, but we would be taking your money for something that will fail again. A soft floor means water has reached the plywood deck underneath, and new carpet over wet decking traps the moisture rather than fixing it. We replace the sub floor first, then lay the new covering on something solid. That is the version worth paying for.
My carpet looks bad but the floor feels solid. Is it a simple job?
Usually yes, and this is the most common flooring job we do. If the deck sounds and feels sound underfoot, it is a strip out, template, and re cover, which is quick by boat repair standards and transforms how the boat looks. Can you replace my carpet with woven vinyl?

Can you repair just one area rather than the whole floor?

How long does a flooring job take?
A straightforward re cover on a sound deck is usually a matter of days. If the sub floor needs replacing it takes longer, since the decking has to come out, go back in, and be sealed before any covering is laid. We give you a timeline once we have seen what is under the old flooring.
Do the seats and console have to come out?
For a full replacement, generally yes. Flooring that is cut around furniture instead of running underneath it always shows its edges and starts lifting there first. Removing and refitting the seating is part of the job, and every fastener goes back into a sealed hole rather than a bare one.
What is different about marine carpet?
Marine carpet is built for sun, water, and drainage in a way household carpet simply is not. It resists fading, does not hold water in the backing, and is made to be bonded to a deck rather than laid loose. Household carpet in a boat looks acceptable for one season and then mildews, rots the backing, and holds moisture against the deck.
Can I change the color?
Yes. A full replacement is the natural point to change color or move to a different material entirely. We go through the available options with you at estimate time so you can see what you are choosing rather than picking from a description.
