Almost every transom and stringer failure starts the same way. Water gets past a fitting, a bolt hole, or a crack, reaches the wood core inside the laminate, and has nowhere to drain. The fiberglass skin looks perfectly normal for years while the core behind it turns soft, which is why this damage is usually found late.
Soft Or Flexing Transoms
A transom that moves under engine thrust, or shows cracks fanning out from the mounting bolts, has lost the core strength it needs to carry the motor.
Rotted Transom Cores
Water saturated wood behind an intact looking skin, usually traced back to unsealed engine bolts, transducer holes, or old accessory screws.
Cracked Stringers
The longitudinal beams that carry the hull load, split from impact, hard running, or years of flex, rebuilt so the grid takes the strain again.
Delaminated Stringers
Where the fiberglass has separated from the core inside, so the stringer looks sound but no longer works as a single structural piece.
Soft Decks And Floors
A springy spot underfoot is usually the first warning that water has reached the plywood sub floor and the structure beneath it.
Bulkheads And Motor Mounts
The cross members and engine bed that tie into the stringer grid, repaired at the same time so the whole structure carries load evenly.

How We Rebuild Transoms And Stringers
There is no shortcut on structural work. Wet core cannot be dried in place and rot cannot be sealed over, so a repair that lasts means removing every bit of failed material and laminating new structure back in. That is slower than a patch, and it is the only version worth paying for.
Moisture Testing And Core Sampling
Before anything is quoted we map how far the damage actually reaches. Sounding the laminate, moisture testing, and taking small core samples tell us whether we are dealing with a contained area or a transom that has gone soft corner to corner. Guessing at this stage is how repairs get reopened a year later, so we would rather find the full extent first and price the real job.
Access And Core Removal
Getting to the core means opening the structure, usually by removing the inner transom skin or lifting a section of deck, and on many transom jobs the engine comes off first. Every trace of saturated or rotted material is then removed back to sound laminate. Leaving even a small pocket of wet core behind means the rot simply continues under the new work.
New Core And Structural Lamination
New core material is fitted and bonded in, then glassed and tabbed into the surrounding hull so the repair becomes part of the structure rather than a piece sitting inside it. We build the laminate back to at least the original schedule, which is why a properly rebuilt transom is typically stronger than it was when the damage began.
Sealing Bedding And Refinishing
The last stage is the one that decides whether this happens again. Every bolt hole and fitting is drilled oversize, sealed, and bedded properly so water cannot reach the new core. Deck and skin are then closed up, faired, and finished in gelcoat matched to your hull before the engine goes back on.

Answers To Common Structural Questions
How do I know if my transom is going soft?
The usual signs are movement or flex in the engine when you trim it, hairline cracks fanning out from the mounting bolts or the corners of the transom, a dull sound instead of a sharp one when you tap across it, and water weeping from bolt holes. Any one of those is worth having looked at, because the fiberglass skin will still look normal long after the core behind it has failed.
Is my boat safe to use with a soft transom?
We would not recommend it. The transom carries the entire weight and thrust of the engine, and a failure at speed is a serious safety problem rather than an inconvenience. If you suspect a soft transom, bring the boat in and let us inspect it before you run it again.
What causes a transom or stringer to rot?
Almost always water reaching the wood core through an opening that was never sealed properly. Engine mounting bolts, transducer holes, drain fittings, ladder screws, and old accessory holes are the common culprits. Once water is inside the laminate it has no way to drain or dry, so it sits against the core and works on it season after season.
What are stringers and why do they matter?
Stringers are the beams running fore and aft inside the hull, tied together with bulkheads to form the structural grid a boat is built around. They carry the load of the engine, the deck, and the hull itself, and they keep the hull from flexing. When stringers fail the boat loses its backbone, which is why this is never a repair to postpone.
How do I know if my stringers are failing?
A soft or springy spot in the floor is usually the first sign, since the deck and the stringers are connected. Others include cracking along the base of the stringer, a hull that feels loose or noisy in chop, standing water in the bilge that never seems to clear, and visible separation between the fiberglass and the core.
Do you replace the whole transom or only part of it?
That depends entirely on what the inspection finds. If the wet core is contained to one area we remove and rebuild that section and tab it into the sound structure around it. If moisture has traveled across the transom then a partial repair only buys a season or two, and we will tell you plainly that full replacement is the honest answer.
Does the engine have to come off?
On most transom jobs, yes. The engine has to be removed to reach the core and to rebuild the area the mounting bolts pass through. Because we do engine work in house, removing and refitting it is part of the same job rather than something you have to arrange separately.
How long does a transom or stringer repair take?
These are among the longest jobs in the shop. A contained transom repair generally runs a few weeks, while a full transom replacement or a stringer grid rebuild can take a good part of an off season. Cure times between laminate layers set much of the pace and cannot be shortened without weakening the repair. We give you an estimated timeline in writing once the boat has been inspected.
Is it worth repairing an older boat?
Often it is, and we will give you a straight answer either way. On a hull that is otherwise sound, and especially on a boat you like and intend to keep, a proper structural rebuild costs far less than replacing the boat. If the repair does not make financial sense we will say so rather than sell you the work, and we can talk through trade options instead.
Will the repair be as strong as the original?
It should be at least as strong. We rebuild the laminate to the original schedule or better and tab the new structure into the surrounding hull, so the repaired area is not a weak point. Rebuilt transoms in particular usually end up stronger than they were before the damage started.
What core material do you use?
It depends on the boat, the application, and what you want to spend. Marine plywood and composite cores each have a place, and composites carry the obvious advantage of not being able to rot. We go through the options with you at estimate time rather than deciding for you.

Is the off season the best time for this work?
Yes, clearly so. Structural work needs the boat in the shop for weeks rather than days, so booking it over the winter means it is finished and ready for spring instead of sitting stripped down through the season you want to be on the water.
